Where the neighborhood ends and the view begins

The Archturus is a single-level, four-bedroom home for sale in St. George, Utah. It stands on the edge of a bluff in Desert Crest, and behind it there is no second row of rooftops.

The lot runs to the edge, the ground drops to the valley floor, and the view carries on across open desert and red rock to Pine Valley Mountain on the northern horizon.

Because that view faces north, the sun stays behind the house for most of the day. The patio keeps its shade while the cliffs and the mountain take the light. Morning arrives on your right, and evening leaves on your left.

And when it is time to be somewhere else, the trails start by the house, Sand Hollow State Park is ten miles down the road, and St. George Regional Airport is three minutes from the driveway.

Cirrus clouds sweeping across a deep blue sky above the desert valley, with mountain ranges along the horizon.

Nobody behind you, now or later

Most back yards look at another back yard. This one ends at the edge of a bluff.

The ground falls away to the valley floor, so there is no lot behind the house to build on, and whatever is built down below stays below your line of sight. The view you see at the showing is the view you keep.

No back neighbor, no fence line of rooftops, no windows looking back at you. Open desert, red cliffs to the east, and the mountain.

A sunset sky of orange and crimson cloud across the whole horizon, gold above dark mountain ridges, seen from the back patio past the outline of a weight rack.

First light and last light, from the same chair

Face north from the back patio and east is on your right, west on your left. The sun comes up on one side, crosses behind the house, and goes down on the other. Move through the year to see where and when.

Calculated for this lot. In midsummer the sun rises and sets north of due east and west, inside the view. By midwinter it has swung to the southeast and southwest, and the low light lands on the cliffs and the mountain instead. The drawing is a sketch of the horizon, not a survey.

Three minutes to the airport

St. George Regional Airport is a three-minute drive, close enough that leaving for a flight feels like running an errand.

The Southern Parkway is around the corner at Exit 6 and runs straight to Interstate 15. From there the big days out are short drives: Snow Canyon in twenty minutes, Zion in forty, and Fremont Street in Las Vegas ninety minutes from the front door.

Desert Crest itself is a neighborhood of single-level homes, wide streets and sidewalks in the Desert Canyons area. There is no homeowners association: no dues, no approval letters, and a concrete pad beside the garage for an RV, a boat or a trailer.

Nothing but trails, as far as you can see

Trails like Secret Sauce start right by the house. Past them the desert stays open all the way to the Arizona line, less than a mile to the south.

Warner Valley is one exit down the Southern Parkway, five minutes away, and it is endless ATV country. From there a side-by-side can take the back way, through the sand dunes, straight to Sand Hollow State Park. Throw the golf clubs in the RZR.

It is a good place to have dogs, too. By car Sand Hollow is ten miles: red sand beaches, open water, and Pine Valley Mountain across the lake.
